Just started out running? Want to challenge yourself? You can still join us in running Leicester! Olivia Brittain had never run before but after a manager at her workplace received a heartbreaking diagnosis, Olivia and some work colleagues decided to do something amazing. Olivia shares her reasons why she is running the 10k race this October.

Olivia said: “Until a couple of weeks ago when I first started training, I had never ran a second in my life- not even for the bus! I am the least athletic person ever, I love my sofa and bed!

However, earlier this year, we were informed that a manager at my workplace was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer whilst she was on maternity leave. She is incredibly passionate about charitable efforts, having organised and contributed to many of the different events we take part in at work. Therefore, myself and 11 other colleagues from my workplace decided to show our support to her by raising money for a local research charity aiming to help families in her position- Hope against Cancer.

I have been affected by cancer massively in my young 24 years, from my dad, grandma, aunties, uncles, even friends. So, when the idea was suggested to me from a few avid runners at work, I jumped (or ran) at the idea to join in. Although we are doing this for our manager, I don’t think there is anyone who hasn’t been affected by cancer in one way or another and so anything that can be done to help is huge.

This is going to be one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever faced; both physically and mentally. Although for some, 10K may not seem like much, for someone who does very minimal exercise- it’s huge! Although I’m nervous, I’m also very excited to do it. I’m looking forward to being able to say ‘I did it!’ at the end of the run, fundraising money towards an incredible charity. Even after just a few training runs, I feel so much better in myself. I can’t wait for the 1st October!”
